What is Windows 11 SE?

Windows 11 SE is a new cloud-first operating system from Microsoft which has been tailored for student use. More specifically for students in primary school and the early years of secondary school.

It is an abridged version of Microsoft 11 and has some different features.

What is Windows 11 Pro?

Windows 11 Pro is an operating system that is very similar to the standard Windows 11 but includes a few additional features that make it more useful in a business setting. These mainly centre around encryption, security, and customisation.

Let’s explore why the Windows 11 SE operating system is an ideal option for the education setting, and how it differs from Windows 11 Pro.

Why Are Both Windows 11 SE and Windows 11 Pro Good For Security?

Both these operating systems are great options for enhanced security compared to the standard Windows 11, yet for very different reasons.

While the Windows 11 Pro boasts extra encryptions to protect the devices on which it operates, Windows 11 SE makes usage safe for children by presenting a paired down, less customisable experience. The former works by protecting data, and the latter keeps pupils safe from:

  • Malware
  • Age-inappropriate content
  • Distraction

What Are The Main Differences Between Windows 11 SE and Windows 11 Pro?

One significant feature on Windows 11 Pro that is not present in the standard Windows 11 is Bitlocker Device Encryption.

With Bitlocker Device Encryption, you can encrypt your entire hard disk and disk volumes using the AES encryption algorithm.

If you have sensitive data on your computer, Windows 11 Pro ensures no one can access your data in case of theft.

In addition to extra cybersecurity with encryptions, Windows 11 Pro has more enterprise features, making it far easier to customise the operating system experience to the specific desires of individual companies.

Windows 11 Pro has the following features in addition to all the functionality it shares with Windows 11 standard edition:

  • MDM
  • Kiosk Mode
  • Dynamic Provisioning
  • Assigned Access
  • 2TB RAM Limit 128 core CPU Core Limit
  • Windows Information Protectionwindows laptop SE front view
  • Remote Desktop Connection
  • Windows Sandbox
  • Hyper-V
  • Group Policy
  • Bitlocker Device Encryption
  • Local Account

Meanwhile, Windows 11 SE has been built in response to educators wanting a far simpler and more intuitive system that is both safe for pupils and keeps them away from distraction.

Windows SE does not come with the Microsoft Store in-built. This is with good reason, as it is a protection for the school setting and lends itself to greater teacher and parental control for what third party apps can be installed on this operating system. Pupils will also not be able to manually install a majority of third-party native apps.

In addition to offering better protection to pupils from malware and age-inappropriate content, it also furthers their learning environment positively. Apps that might be distracting from schoolwork such as iTunes or Spotify cannot be manually installed on the Windows 11 SE operating system.

However, that is not to say that Windows 11 SE is completely spartan for apps. Selected beneficial apps will be available to add. Certain approved apps from the following curated categories can be added with teacher approval:

  • Content-filtering apps
  • Test-taking solutions
  • Accessibility apps
  • Apps that facilitate classroom communication
  • Essential diagnostics, management, connectivity, and supportability apps
  • Browsers

Both Windows SE 11 and Windows Pro have MDM capability but with very different intentions.windows SE laptop side view

Unlike standard Windows 11, both the education tailored Windows and the business tailored Windows allow for greater levels of control. CEOs and teachers can use the MDM to oversee how their staff/pupils are utilising their devices and limit access to certain features.

App installation on Windows 11 SE is managed through Intune for Education. Just as businesses can manage employee devices, so too can teachers manage students’ devices.

Windows 11 SE is intended for simplicity and learning. It is high-quality yet intended to work on extremely affordable machines like the new Microsoft Surface SE. It is in many ways less flexible than the Windows 11 Pro but that will be a good feature as its target audience will have a more standard focus i.e., education.

With Intune for Education, parents and teachers can be assured of the security of children’s devices and this allows for schools to extend 1:1 computing to all pupils. 1:1 Intune computing will better enable learning and success in education. It will create equality in the learning experience of children across the UK as each can work on their own personalised device and develop skills relevant to today’s career landscape.
