Our journey towards digital inclusion began with a simple question: What if every device refresh could help somebody else access the digital world?
Taking the First Step
Earlier this year, HardSoft became a signatory of the Government-backed IT Reuse for Good Charter.
The Charter encourages organisations to take a reuse-first approach to technology, ensuring that suitable devices are refurbished, repurposed and donated to people who need them most rather than being retired prematurely.
It was developed as part of the UK’s wider Digital Inclusion Action Plan and aims to tackle the gap between those who have access to technology and those who do not. For us, signing the Charter wasn’t simply about making a pledge.
It was about formalising a commitment that aligned perfectly with our existing approach to technology lifecycle management, sustainability and responsible asset disposal.
Most importantly, it was about turning good intentions into meaningful action.
Turning Commitment into Reality
Our first opportunity to put those principles into practice came close to home.
Working with a local school, we refurbished and donated 30 laptops that had previously been traded in by customers. Every device was securely wiped, professionally prepared and ready for a new purpose.
Those laptops are now supporting pupils at Hare Street Community Primary School in Harlow, helping the school expand access to technology, support SEND initiatives and develop future digital learning programmes. The project demonstrated something powerful.
A device that no longer met one organisation’s requirements could still create enormous value somewhere else. The technology didn’t change. Its impact did.
Creating More Than Environmental Benefits
When people think about IT reuse, they often focus on sustainability.
The environmental benefits are certainly significant. Reusing devices keeps technology in circulation for longer, reduces electronic waste and helps organisations minimise their environmental footprint.
However, the social benefits can be even more compelling.
A donated laptop can help a child access educational resources.
It can help someone apply for employment opportunities.
It can help families connect with essential services.
It can help individuals develop the digital skills increasingly required in modern life.

Expanding the Impact Through Partnerships
After seeing what was possible through our own donations, we began asking a second question: What if we could help our customers do the same?
Every year, organisations across the UK refresh thousands of laptops, tablets and smartphones. Many of those devices still have years of useful life remaining.
Through our device lifecycle and recovery services, we are now helping customers explore opportunities to give suitable devices a meaningful second life.
Working alongside organisations such as the Digital Poverty Alliance and through initiatives involving customers including St John Ambulance, we are helping create pathways that enable secure device recovery, refurbishment and redistribution to people and organisations that need them most.
This allows businesses to extend the positive impact of their technology investment long after the devices leave their organisation.
